Museums offer a little something for everyone. A bit of the arts, a dash of nature and science, and quite a bit of history. The educational benefits abound, and the opportunities here are diverse. If you’re looking for some culture in Chittenden County, this is your list.

THE BCA CENTER

Burlington

The BCA Center features 3 floors of Contemporary artwork in permanent gallery spaces. A 4th Floor houses the Vermont Metro Gallery, featuring a regular roster of contemporary Vermont based artists.

FLEMING MUSEUM OF ART
Burlington

With Vermont’s most comprehensive collection of art and anthropological artifacts, the Fleming Museum offers innovative exhibitions of contemporary and historic art from around the world, complemented by year-round programming for all ages. The Fleming Museum is located on the campus of the University of Vermont.

BIRDS OF VERMONT MUSEUM
Huntington

Discover birds in the wild, explore forest trails and a walk-in treehouse, or picnic near pollinator gardens or the pond. The Birds of Vermont Museum also offers special exhibits from science to art.

COLCHESTER LOG SCHOOLHOUSE

Colchester

Visit a restored 1815 log schoolhouse. Located in Airport Park in Colchester, just along the bicycle path, this building opened to the public as an information center and museum.

ECHO, LEAHY CENTER FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN
Burlington

At this museum, you can learn about your natural environment and how you can become a steward in your community. With more than 100 interactive exhibits, this museum offers a lot to explore. You'll find 70 species of fish, reptiles, and amphibians, an early learning interactive space, a popular indoor play area for kids (with slide, water table, imagination play and more), regular exhibits, a 3D theater, and more. 

PERKINS MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY
Burlington

The Perkins Museum of Geology is located on University of Vermont’s Trinity Campus, and is dedicated to presenting geologic concepts, processes and samples to entertain and inform students, scholars, and the inquisitive public. Admission is free, and it the Museum is accessible. The Perkins Museum of Geology is home to an impressive collection of rocks, minerals and fossils from Vermont and around the world. The Museum is also home to The Charlotte Whale.

SHELBURNE MUSEUM
Shelburne

With a variety of exhibitions and collections, you can experience American history, art, and design at the Shelburne Museum. Play in the gardens, or explore any of the thirty-nine distinct structures on the forty-five acre property.

ETHAN ALLEN HOMESTEAD MUSEUM & HISTORIC SITE

Burlington

In the Allen House, you’ll see some of the daily tasks and skills required to survive on the Vermont frontier. Learn about Ethan’s philosophical writings and land speculation activities, or check out the exhibit galleries on archeology and history. You can also picnic and explore walking trails on site.

VERMONT NATIONAL GUARD MUSEUM & LIBRARY
Colchester

Dedicated to the accumulation, preservation and display of artifacts and memorabilia spanning the history of the state of Vermont and our nation. Displays range from the Revolutionary War through the Iraqi conflict. There is a large assortment of artifacts from the Civil War and other eras. In addition, there is a large outdoor park with armored vehicles and military aircraft. The museum is open to the public throughout the year.

HERITAGE WINOOSKI MILL MUSEUM
Winooski

Exhibits document the industrial and cultural history of the Winooski Falls mill era from 1838-1954. This museum is located in the historic Champlain Mill overlooking the Winooski River.
